Things are rarely as bad as you think they are.

We humans have a tendency to imagine the worst in many situations. And yet, the things we often fear rarely come to pass.

In the words of Michel de Montaigne, “My life has been full of terrible misfortunes — most of which never happened.”

Mark Twain is often quoted to have said something similar.

In my own life, when things were at their worst and the idea of repeating a 100% positive affirmation made me feel like giving up, a phrase which helped me find the courage to try again was one generally considered a “bad” affirmation.

Actually, for those who know the origins of New Thought philosophy, it was a good denial statement.

“It’s not as bad as I think it is.”

Invariably, as I regained the courage to try again, I found that the situation was never as bad as I thought, and was, in fact, much better than I had imagined.

There are 2 lessons here.

First, don’t worry about using any specific guidelines for creating your own affirmations.

Use your own words, even if they aren’t 100% positive.

Second, remember that it’s rarely as bad as you think it is.

Most often, it’s really a lot better than you imagine.
